Hello everyone!  I am the new Student Services Coordinator for Oakland High School.  My name is Nancy Eskew.  I retired as the Dean of Students / Curriculum Director of Oakland CUSD #5 one year ago.  I am now back part time.  Most months I will be at school on Mondays and Wednesdays only.  If Monday is a holiday, I will be at school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  Occasionally, I will have to change these dates due to workshops, testing, etc.  You can always call the High School office to check and see if I am working on any particular day.

I graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1971 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education.  My Master's Degree in Educational Curriculum was completed in 1988.  My hobbies include spending time with my husband (Rick), two children and their spouses (Amy & Todd Eddington - Springfield and Mark & Angie Eskew - Ashmore), and my 6 wonderful grandchildren (Seth, Cade, Madison, Maiya, Melia & Nate).  I also enjoy gardening, reading and going to the grandchildren's school and sport activities.

I hope to have a Wiki website set up in the future to assist those interested in more information on colleges, scholarships, financial aid, careers. etc.

Greetings Music Parents!

I am delighted to introduce myself as the new music teacher here at Oakland and I am here to answer any and all questions about the music program this year.

Students in grades K-5 will have a daily music class in which they will be very active.  We started singing and moving on the first day.  There will be plenty of opportunities for them to experience music through listening activities, movement, singing, and playing instruments.

Band is part of the schedule this year. I will be having instrument try-outs Friday-Wednesday to allow to the students to test the different instruments and see what they like. The band parent information night is this coming Wednesday, August 25th at 5:30 in the music room for all parents with students in grades 5-12 that are currently enrolled in band and those interested in joining this fall.  I will be discussing my goals for the coming year as well as discussing instrument rentals.  A representative from the Music Shoppe in Champaign will be present to help answer you questions as well. Instrument Rental Day will be Thursday, August 26th from 3:30-6:30.  Please stop in whenever is convenient for you to sign up for your student’s instrument.

Chorus will have its first meeting at 3:30 this Friday, August 19.  A regular schedule will be assigned for future rehearsal dates after this meeting.  We will begin preparing for IMEA auditions and the Youth in Harmony Celebration.

The Christmas Concert will be Monday December 6th at 6:30pm.  All music students will perform.

I am looking forward to a fantastic year and am excited to meet you all. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me.

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year!

Greetings!

Is it just me, or are the years flying by?  I would like to welcome my students to another productive year in LC17.  I have no doubt that this year will be great.

So what are we going to do this year?  Here is a glance at what this year has in store for you.

In Speech, we will weave traditional textbook learning with speech presentation.  We always manage to sprinkle in some ice breaking games and activities to help overcome that dreaded public speaking fear.

In English I, the year is comprised of short stories, mythology, Romeo and Juliet, a time period unit with a focus on poetry, and, of course, grammar and usage and writing. We will be exposed to different cultures from different time periods around the world.

English II is a writing intensive course, so we plan to do a lot of writing. The literature we will cover includes House on Mango Street, Cyrano de Bergerac, and To Kill A Mockingbird

Much of English III will be devoted in ACT prep.  Vocabulary building, essay writing and grammar, usage, and mechanics will comprise most of the year.

We plan to do a great deal of reading in English Literature. We are revisiting literature circles in addition to independent reading.

English IV will be devoted to preparing the students for college. We will read novels recognized as “must-reads” for college, learn application and scholarship processes, and write a research paper.

Just a reminder that extra credit is available. Each student has an opportunity for twenty-five points extra credit each quarter. A handout will be distributed at the beginning of the year.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me anytime at 217.346.2166 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Looking forward to a fabulous year,
