Greetings!

Is it just me, or are the years flying by?  I would like to welcome my students to another productive year in LC17.  I have no doubt that this year will be great.

So what are we going to do this year?  Here is a glance at what this year has in store for you.

In Speech, we will weave traditional textbook learning with speech presentation.  We always manage to sprinkle in some ice breaking games and activities to help overcome that dreaded public speaking fear.

In English I, the year is comprised of short stories, mythology, Romeo and Juliet, a time period unit with a focus on poetry, and, of course, grammar and usage and writing. We will be exposed to different cultures from different time periods around the world.

English II is a writing intensive course, so we plan to do a lot of writing. The literature we will cover includes House on Mango Street, Cyrano de Bergerac, and To Kill A Mockingbird

Much of English III will be devoted in ACT prep.  Vocabulary building, essay writing and grammar, usage, and mechanics will comprise most of the year.

We plan to do a great deal of reading in English Literature. We are revisiting literature circles in addition to independent reading.

English IV will be devoted to preparing the students for college. We will read novels recognized as “must-reads” for college, learn application and scholarship processes, and write a research paper.

Just a reminder that extra credit is available. Each student has an opportunity for twenty-five points extra credit each quarter. A handout will be distributed at the beginning of the year.

Spelling Bee 2009
Thursday, 12 February 2009 08:24

Lake Crest School held its local spelling bee on Friday, February 6, 2009. Four students from each junior high grade level were chosen to represent their class.

Representing the sixth grade class were Angelica Apple, Hannah Bacon, Chloe Grimes, and Hayden Strader. Spellers representing the seventh grade class were Katie Fitzpatrick, Zach Hoel, Sydney Turner, and Zack Zimmerman. Spellers representing the eighth grade class were Cody Borntreger, Shannon McBurney, Michael Strader, and Morgan Tolley.

Cody Borntreger spelled his way to victory by correctly spelling the word futon. Shannon McBurney placed second by correctly spelling the word alamo in a spell-off with Chloe Grimes. All three students will advance to the Coles County Spelling Bee to be held at Lake Crest School on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the All-Purpose Room.

The spelling bee is open to the public, and the public is encouraged to attend.
